Popular Emmaline’s Hot Cross Buns back on the shelves for Easter

Hot cross buns mean… Easter! A traditional hot cross bun, warmed or toasted with lashings of butter, is a tangible symbol of Easter; even the aroma of the spices can conjure long-held memories of Easter going back to childhood for so many Australians.

The hot cross bun has been around for centuries, a simple bread version with cross adornment stretching back to Egyptian times. In 1500s England, the delicious hot cross bun was believed to possess holy qualities!

It was thought the buns could ward off evil, cure illness, protect the home from decay, or ships from sinking. If shared, the tasty bread could cement a friendship. Considered them to be supernatural, Queen Elizabeth banned the bun in the 1500s, except on the most holy of occasions - funerals, Christmas and, of course, Good Friday.

And so hot cross buns became once-a-year treats that appear on our supermarket shelves before Easter, and then disappear immediately after Easter Monday, for another year.

Traditionally, the recipe is simple, tried and true - bread dough, filled with raisins and other dried fruits and spices, decorated with a cross on top. The recipe has stood the test of centuries, and Emmaline’s premium traditional hot cross buns are perennial favourites! We have recently welcomed two new varieties – fresh and yummy apple and cinnamon, and a decadent double chocolate, so you will be spoiled for choice of premium hot cross bun for your shopping list!

Previously voted ‘Best in State’ in SA, Emmaline’s traditional hot cross buns are at the top of a field of worthy contenders in the foodie state of South Australia, and are also well received in Victoria and New South Wales.

There is a simple reason for their appeal – they’re everything you love in a great hot cross bun recipe, amplified. More fruit, more spices - more flavour!

It’s not just a matter of taking a great recipe and increasing the essential ingredients – the dough needs to be able to support that extra fruit or filling. And Emmaline’s dough is hand-made, with an extra-long proving period which provides a strong dough capable of holding the weight of the extra filling. Baked in a steam oven to ensure they stay nice and moist, the quality dough and baking process allows the buns to last a few weeks in the pantry.

So… if they make it past your family and friends on the long weekend, you can stretch out that Easter feeling for weeks!
